Dastan is pleased to display an installation of three sketchbooks by Manijeh Akhavan, titled “A Turning Affair”, at Electric Room from August 25 to 30, 2017. The presentation consists three sketchbooks filled with drawings she made of her trips.
The artist explains: “One of my constant obsessions has been traveling and observing as a pedestrian. Thus, I decided to draw and paint like a traveler. Using color pencils in a small sketchbook. A Japanese album! Something a traveler can always carry with her.
“Travel photos and routine observations of my surroundings became my subjects. Color pencils were always accessible and I could work on every detail with them. The small size of the sketchbooks kept me moving.
“These works do not seem to be directly related to each other, but they have become interconnected in the context of these Japanese albums. In fact, each work has created a path leading to the next one and this visual chain has become my travelogue. Each album is a season. These three sketchbooks show the way together and create a path for a leisurely walk.”
Manijeh Akhavan (b. 1989, Tehran, Iran) studied at University of Art, Tehran. Her work has been exhibited in six group exhibitions and is scheduled to be shown in “Camp”, a group exhibition curated by Sam Samiee in September 2017 at Dastan’s Basement.
