Kamrooz Aram’s work disrupts the false opposition between ornament and abstraction, and challenges ornament’s relegation to discourses of criminality and excess. In his wide ranging exhibitions, he stages an encounter between the Euro-American avant-garde and non-western forms of abstraction, interrogating the boundaries between art, artifact, and modes of display. His lyrical paintings and arrangements break down the hierarchies of modernist aesthetics, asking that we rethink its categories and re-encounter these ideas and objects anew. Combining painting, sculpture, collage and exhibition design, he creates an interdependence between object and display, revealing the significance of design and architecture in affecting the interpretation of art.
Kamrooz Aram was born in Shiraz, Iran and lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, USA. Recent exhibitions include: Elusive Ornament, Peter Blum Gallery, New York; Privacy, an Exhibition, The Arts Club of Chicago; Lives of Forms: Kamrooz Aram and Iman Issa, Z33 House for Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture, Hasselt, Belgium; The New Arabesque, Nature Morte Gallery, New Delhi, India; An Object, A Gesture, A Décor, FLAG Art Foundation, New York; In Memory of the Arabesque, Green Art Gallery, Dubai, UAE; Focus: Kamrooz Aram, The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth; Ancient Blue Ornament, The Atlanta Contemporary; Ornament for Indifferent Architecture, Museum Dhondt-Dhaenens, Deurle, Belgium.

Reza Aramesh (b. 1970, Iran) focuses on photography and sculpture. He currently lives and works in London, a city he moved to at the age of 15. He received his MFA from Goldsmiths University, London (1997).

Working in photography, sculpture, video, and performance, Reza Aramesh’s understanding of the history of art, film, and literature is ever-present in his artwork. As a commentary on war reportage, for example, Aramesh takes images of violence appearing in newspapers, online articles, and social media out of their original context to explore the narratives of representation and iconography of subjected body apropos race, class, and sexuality. His work, as such, is a critical engagement with Western art history.

He represented Iran at the 56th Edition of the Venice Biennale and has exhibited worldwide including the UK, France, China, USA, Dubai, and Iran. He has orchestrated several performances and exhibitions in institutions including the Barbican Centre, Tate Britain, and ICA, London. Other projects have been staged in public squares, nightclubs, and industrial warehouses.

    Andisheh Avini

    Overview

Andisheh Avini (b. 1974, New York) is an artist who uses painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, often incorporating the traditional craft of marquetry in his artistic practice.

Andisheh Avini explores the duality of his own identity by combining iconic images like Persian calligraphy, decorative motifs, and portraiture with occidental concepts of minimalism and abstraction. Avini's approach speaks to a larger globalized society of nomads, the displaced, and the wayfarer, reflecting a contemporary multicultural experience to which many can relate

Maryam Hoseini (b. 1988, Tehran) is a New York-based artist.

Maryam Hoseini delves into the creation of liminal worlds that serve as poignant explorations of gender construction and the inherent violence of power dynamics. Hoseini’s paintings become a gateway to a realm where the boundaries of subjectivity are probed, revealing fragmented architectural environments as the stages for unfolding narratives.

Hoseini’s work has been exhibited at the New Museum, NY; Aldrich Museum, Ridgefield, CT; Sadie Coles HQ, London; High Art, Paris; Deborah Schamoni Gallery, Munich; Green Art Gallery, Dubai ; Galleria Massimo Minini, Brescia, Italy; The Shed, NY; MoMA P.S.1, NY; amongst others.

They received a BA from Sooreh Art University in Tehran in 2012 and MFA degrees from Bard College and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2016. Hoseini is currently the Co-Chair of Painting for the MFA Program at Bard College.

    Hoda Kashiha

    Overview

Hoda Kashiha (b. 1986, Tehran, Iran) is a graduate of Painting from the University of Tehran (BA, 2009) and Boston University (MFA, 2014). She works and lives in Tehran.

Works of Hoda Kashiha bounce between everyday life and the imagery she sets out to produce. Through the use of non-linear narrative, dark humor, and mythological, religious, and modern icons, the artist meets with difficult moments in her personal and political life. Drawing from a variety of references – "from Malevich to Instagram" – she composes her fragmented narratives. Kashiha uses digital tools to first draw a work and then construct it on canvas, layer upon layer. Nevertheless, this way of fragmenting motifs deals with major contemporary subjects such as persisting gender relations. The body plays an important role in many of the artist’s works. It's through the body that she relates to the world, becomes aware of her desires, and constructs an identity. Drawing the body not only projects her personal life but also the external world. Being interested in man and woman interaction, she uses various tools (airbrush, i-Pad, stencil) and subjects (body fragments, geometric abstraction) that affect an ambiguity that separates traditional definitions of male-female, resulting in gender fluidity.

  • Shahryar Nashat

    Overview
Shahryar Nashat makes sculptures, videos, and other works in which the human body and its representations play a central role. However, this is not merely a matter of visual analysis. Rather, Nashat gets at the very experience of what it means to be a body at a moment when the technologies that filter experience encourage fragmentation and distance. Desire, mortality, fragility, and resilience are among the thematic concerns his work addresses. Nashat pays special attention to framing and pedestals, treating them as integral parts of his work. He also often alters a gallery’s architecture and lighting, allowing his exhibitions to function as fully embodied meditations on art’s ability to reflect the current state of human life. Their prescience and mystery also make them function as windows into an uncertain future.

    Farah Ossouli

Farah Ossouli (b. 1953, Zanjan, Iran) is a painter working and living in Tehran. She received her BA in Graphic Design from the University of Tehran, where she taught between 1972 and 1987. She founded DENA, a female art collective that has organized over 30 exhibitions since 2001. She is a member of the Society of Iranian Painters.
Farah Ossouli achieved a unique fusion of techniques, materials, themes, and narrations during her forty-year career as an artist. She has been a pioneer in introducing contemporary themes and ideas into miniature painting. The latest collections of Farah Ossouli are based on classical European paintings (by Delacroix, Goya, David, Manet, Titan, Rembrandt, and Ingres, among others), chosen by the artist based on their historical and conceptual relevance vis-à-vis the manifestation of violence in our world today. By transforming the medium (Persian painting) and figures (female holding the torch), Farah Ossouli is presenting the viewer with a new way of looking at the events taking place around us.

Behjat Sadr (1924, Arak, Iran – 2009, Corsica, France) is among the first female artists and university lecturers of Iran. She graduated in Painting from the University of Tehran (1954). She was an active presence in the international visual art scene beginning in the 1960s. Having studied in Italy, she became interested in abstraction and created her first series of works between 1961 and 1966.

Sadr is known for using a palette knife on canvases that create impressionistic visual rhythm, movement and geometric shapes. Black dominates a major part of her work. She uses blotches to create dynamic patterns. By placing paint directly on the surface of the work and removing paint with a knife countless times, she arrives at the familiar visual structure of her paintings. Sadr was also a photographer and known for her collages.

    Meghdad Lorpour

Meghdad Lorpour (b. 1983, Shiraz, Iran) is a painter based in Tehran. He studied painting at Shahed University, Tehran (2010).
Throughout his career, Meghdad’s subject matter has ranged from portraiture to landscape and still life, and his analytical approach to every aspect of his work has constantly evolved. He begins with a multi-layered phase of research, which includes deep dives into related literature, travel, documentation, and recording oral histories, and continues by exploring his recollections of the research process as sketches and experiments in technique and representation. After his early focus on portraiture, inspired by Persian mythology and Miniature Painting, Lorpour soon shifted towards looking at animals in their natural habitats, contextualizing them in his research on mythological history. More recently, he has focused on nature itself — landscapes and the different aspects of the natural environment. The artist has been meticulously looking at nature through certain points of view and sought to induce inner mythological layers to his settings while depicting natural scenery.

Mohammad Hossein Maher (b. 1957, Abadan, Iran) is a contemporary Iranian painter and sculptor, with a degree in painting from Tehran's School of Fine Arts. He is a well-known figure and is considered one of the prominent painters in contemporary Iranian art, teaching art to students and aspiring artists for many years.

Throughout his years of activity, has consistently offered insightful perspectives on the cultural and historical experiences of society, as well as his inner world, to his audience. In his artistic journey, Mohammad Hossein Maher initially focused on southern Iran, holding exhibitions featuring local elements. Over time, his work evolved, delving into deeper cultural and mythological aspects, embracing the symbolism of myth and folkloric figures. Maher explored the themes of migration and displacement, particularly during his "Yademan" series. His "Peleh" series, on the other hand, is a more personal exploration of movement and progression, emphasizing the significance of texture and minimalism. Maher's work reflects his deep connection to cultural and historical elements, presenting a thought-provoking narrative through his art. He often places colors in small pieces on the surface, thus confronting the viewer with numerous frames in a primary composition. The predominant composition found in his works is the "cross composition." In what he has produced, both in terms of symbols and in terms of attention to qualities and concepts, the study of Manichaean and Zoroastrian art cannot be overlooked.

Nicky Nodjoumi (b. 1942, Kermanshah, Iran), known also as Nicky Nodjumi, is an Iranian-born American painter. He honed his artistic skills and gained recognition in his homeland before relocating to New York. Mr. Nodjoumi imitated Russian painters in his youth, shifted focus to landscape painting following a friend's suggestion, and, after completing high school, moved to Tehran to pursue a degree in Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Nicky Nodjoumi, known for his large-scale figurative oil canvases, skillfully combines historical and phantasmagorical imagery with sharp political commentaries. His compositions are straightforward, precise, and expressive, often featuring disintegrated portraits, disguised faces, clowns, and animals. Using storytelling, he piles bodies and body parts irreverently, challenging the connection between art and politics. Nodjoumi's works, influenced by social and political incidents, evoke a sense of fragmented narratives and the absurdity of power. His art has gained a significant following both in Iran and internationally, reflecting his enduring critical approach over six decades of artistic activity.

  • Morteza Pourhosseini (b. 1985, Ahvaz, Khuzestan Province, Iran) received his BA in Painting from Shahed University of Art (2010).   Works of the artist in "In-between" framed his contemporary characters within the tradition of religious iconography of northern Europe. Their covered eyes, gazes that were lowered or beheld the horizon, their pliant bodies, pointed to an incident – an incident that has taken place and whose consequences were yet to come to light. "In-Between" seems to emphasize this sense of being on the threshold, "They are just one step from the Fall and the faceless figures are only observers."

  • Mamali Shafahi & Domenico Gutknecht

    Overview

Mamali Shafahi (b. 1982, Iran) and Domenico Gutknecht (b. 1987, Germany) are an artist duo based between Marseille and Paris. Shafahi, trained at the École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts Paris-Cergy and the University of Art in Tehran, works across immersive installation, sculpture, and experimental film. His VR collaboration with Ali Eslami, nerd_funk, was presented at Het Nieuwe Instituut, the Vancouver Biennale, and IDFA, and received the Golden Calf for Best Interactive Film at the Netherlands Film Festival. His work has been shown at venues including Palais de Tokyo, Paris; Dastan’s Basement, Tehran; Het Nieuwe Instituut; and Garage Rotterdam.
Gutknecht, who studied media and journalism in Berlin, brings a background in visual culture and independent publishing. Together, they have developed a collaborative practice spanning immersive installation, sculpture, painting, and hybrid multimedia environments, informed by a shared interest in transformation, mythology, and the porous boundary between reality and fantasy.
Their joint projects have been presented at ARCO Madrid, Frieze London, Frieze Los Angeles, Club Rhubarb, New York; Double V, Marseille and Paris; and Baró Galeria, Palma. Across these contexts, their work engages surreal imagery, fluid narratives, and subtle shifts between the magical, the intimate, and the real.

  • Farrokh Mahdavi, Overview

    Farrokh Mahdavi

    Overview

Farrokh Mahdavi (b. 1970, Tehran, Iran) taught himself painting before studying with master painters and cultivating his passion for the medium. He lives and works in Tehran.

Canvases of Farrokh Mahdavi can be distinguished through unique pinkish hues. His technique aims to defamiliarize the well-known facial elements in a face. The fleshy-pink color of the artist's figures allows the rendering of "a more general depiction of human beings devoid of stereotypes of gender and race."  The faces in Mahdavi’s work are reduced to features like the eyes or the lips, and the rest are covered by thick layers of pink paint, hinting at the emotional world of his characters. He tries to specify forms and conditions without directly depicting anything additional, as he believes it deviates from the main point.

    Ghasemi Brothers

    Overview

Ghasemi Brothers – Morteza, Sina, and Mojtaba Ghasemi Sheelsar – have worked together since 2015. They pursue their painting individually but work together on a single piece when part of the collective.

The trio works freely and without thematic or technique-related limits, giving them room to express themselves freely. Their approach has provided them with the ability to continue working together. Initially, they created a single discourse based on their shared themes and interests. Ghasemi Brothers gradually started to paint objects reminiscent of their native city, the coastal area of Bandar Anzali, and its ecology – the Caspian Sea, rain, and the color blue.

Their collaborative work has been featured in “Red Room” (Dastan’s Basement, July 2016), “Red Room 2: Migratory Birds” curated by Roya Khadjavi (Elga Wimmer Gallery, New York, April 2017), and “Blue Room” (V-Gallery, a Dastan: Outside Project, 2018).
