Ghasemi Brothers | "In Between Storms": Zaal Art Gallery x FYND x Contemporary Spaces

FYND X ZAAL ART GALLERY in collaboration with Contemporary Spaces presents "In Between Storms", an exhibition of works including some of the latest works by Ghasemi Brothers-Morteza, Mojtaba, and Sina Ghasemi Sheelsar. The exhibition will open on September 23 and be open to public viewing through 21 October, 2026.
"In Between Storms" brings together a new series of paintings on canvas alongside works on paper. The exhibition continues the brothers' long-standing engagement with the landscape and atmosphere of their native city of Bandar Anzali along the Caspian Sea, while offering a closer view of the distinct gestures, rhythms, and sensibilities that emerge from their individual practices.
Working together since 2015, the three brothers have developed a practice that moves fluidly between collective and individual authorship. While each maintains an independent approach to painting, their shared work is shaped by an ongoing visual conversation; one that has developed over years of working alongside one another. Their paintings do not merely seek to reproduce Bandar Anzali as a recognizable landscape. Instead, the city is transformed into an unstable visual memory: rain, water, vegetation, weather, and the shifting atmosphere of the Caspian coast are reduced, intensified, and reconstructed through paint.
The canvases in "In Between Storms" function in part as a reconsideration of this trajectory. Drawing on motifs, sensations, and approaches that have appeared throughout the brothers' practice, the new works revisit the visual vocabulary of Bandar Anzali through a distinctly hyper-abstract language. Forms are pushed to the point of instability, while the landscape becomes less a subject to be represented than a source of movement, tension, and sensation. Harsh and sharply defined brushstrokes create fractured surfaces in which recognizable references to the natural world intermittently emerge and disappear.
Alongside the canvases, the exhibition presents a series
of works on paper that are not part of their collective work but rather painted by each of the brothers individually. Seen together, these works form a continuous and shifting palette in which the differences between their approaches become particularly apparent. One works through darker atmospheres and intricate, densely articulated forms, primarily using acrylic. Another introduces sharper and more vivid colors, with oil pastel becoming a central element of his process. The other works with broader, more dispersed gestures, creating surfaces that recall the fluidity of watercolor, while working instead with soft pastels.
Presented together, these individual works reveal the three distinct voices within the collective. Rather than dissolving their differences into a single style, the exhibition allows those differences to remain visible, creating a visual conversation between three approaches to color, texture, gesture, and atmosphere.
The title "In Between Storms" refers to the environmental conditions that have long informed the brothers' imagery: the recurring weather of the Caspian coast, and the interval of stillness that follows it. The works inhabit that interval-the pause after rain, the moment before the next front arrives-where the landscape is caught mid-change, neither fully cleared nor fully obscured. The storm becomes less an event than a condition: an atmosphere through which the brothers reconsider their relationship to place and to one another.
Since 2015, Ghasemi Brothers have worked without thematic or technical restrictions, allowing their shared practice to develop through experimentation and an open exchange of ideas. Their early works established a collective discourse around subjects and interests shared by the three brothers. Over time, their attention increasingly turned toward objects and environments associated with Bandar Anzali and its coastal ecology-the Caspian Sea, rain, vegetation, and above all, the color blue.
With "In Between Storms", Ghasemi Brothers return to the landscape that has remained at the center of their practice, approaching it once again through the distance of memory, abstraction, and individual experience. The exhibition offers a view of a collective practice that has, over time, become increasingly defined by the productive tension between three distinct painters.
