Dastan is pleased to announce “Weight of Time”, a presentation by Kolsum Salehi at Electric Room. The show will be open to public view from May 11 to May 16, 2018.
Kolsum Salehi (b. 1989, Zanjan, Iran) is a graduate of painting from University of Guilan (Rasht, Iran). He work has been presented in one solo exhibition (“The Wasteland”, O Gallery, Tehran: 2015) and a number of group shows. In her work, Kolsum Salehi aims to show fresh experiments in form and abstraction, causing her exhibitions to have a site-specific aspect, usually dominating the setting.
In “Weight of Time”, the artist seeks to depict an embodiment of time and its power while imagining life outside of time. She has created a space in which life, even without the force of time, animates the bones. For this purpose, she has conceived ideal forms of bones and pieces of skin —the latter representing the force of life.
Writing on this series, the artist explains: “More than depicting lifelessness, bone remains are sanctifications of life —a structure whose details have been meticulously created, reminding one of the symmetry and order hidden in all the aspects of the skeleton, and separating the inner white body from the light and dark background. Here, the painter works like an archeologist, as if finding a piece under layers of dust which in contrast to its dead essence, is the key to finding a valued treasure. Without being representative of its animate self, this skeleton has ended its structure by growing leaves and bringing life. At the borders of death and existence, decaying bones start multiplying and growing and thus holding the tree of life firmly.”
