  • Soft Edge of the Blade Vol. 3

    Curated by Mamali Shafahi

    Date: Nov 11 - Jan 8, 2025

Location: Gallery 2, Leila Heller Gallery, Dubai, UAE

Zaal Art Gallery and Leila Heller Gallery join forces to proudly presents “Soft Edge of the Blade Vol. 3”, on view from November 10 to January 8 at Gallery 2, Leila Heller Gallery, Dubai.

The exhibition is curated by Mamali Shafahi and includes works by Reza Aramesh, Pooya Aryanpour, Fereydoun Ave, Andisheh Avini, Maryam Ayeen and Abbas Shahsavar, Homa Delvaray, Reza Derakshani, Mehdi Farhadian, Bita Fayyazi, Marcos Grigorian, Ghasem Hajizadeh, Morteza Khosravi, Farideh Lashai, Meghdad Lorpour, Farrokh Mahdavi, Ardeshir Mohasses, Bahman Mohasses, Mehrdad Mohebali, Arash Nazari, Shirin Neshat, Nicky Nodjoumi, Farah Ossouli, Peybak, Morteza Pourhosseini, Mohammad Piryaee, Behrang Samadzadegan, and Mamali Shafahi.

Following acclaimed exhibitions at Frieze No.9 Cork Street (London, 2022) and Zaal Art Gallery (Toronto, 2023), “Soft Edge of the Blade” returns for its third edition; this time in Dubai. Continuing its inquiry into the many faces of violence, the series turns its gaze to a region where its very existence and nomenclature, like the very notion of “the Middle East”, has been shaped through a vocabulary of conflict. But here, in this third act, the exhibition proposes something quieter, more persistent: what if the violence we fear is already within us; codified in language, tradition, memory, and even beauty?

This edition marks the most expansive iteration yet, bringing together artists whose practices span painting, sculpture, photography, and hybrid media, each approaching the theme of violence from a distinct angle. The mood oscillates between the symbolic and the visceral, the intimate and the public. Their inquiries touch on memory, history, censorship, language, ornament, domesticity, rupture, resistance, and beauty.

Reza Aramesh (b. 1970, Iran) focuses on photography and sculpture. He currently lives and works in London, a city he moved to at the age of 15. He received his MFA from Goldsmiths University, London (1997).
Working in photography, sculpture, video, and performance, Reza Aramesh’s understanding of the history of art, film, and literature is ever-present in his artwork. As a commentary on war reportage, for example, Aramesh takes images of violence appearing in newspapers, online articles, and social media out of their original context to explore the narratives of representation and iconography of subjected body apropos race, class, and sexuality. His work, as such, is a critical engagement with Western art history.
He represented Iran at the 56th Edition of the Venice Biennale and has exhibited worldwide, including the UK, France, China, USA, Dubai, and Iran. He has orchestrated several performances and exhibitions in institutions, including the Barbican Centre, Tate Britain, and ICA, London. Other projects have been staged in public squares, nightclubs, and industrial warehouses.

    Pooya Aryanpour

    Overview
Pooya Aryanpour (b. 1971, Tehran, Iran) is an artist, art instructor, and university lecturer based in Tehran. He studied Painting at Azad University of Tehran, where he obtained his MA in 1999. He has curator shows over the past three decades.
Pooya Aryanpour has made use of mirrors in his sculptures since the 2000s, a practice made popular by artist Monir Farmanfarmaian in the early 1970s. Aryanpour's studies of Qajar’s (19th-20th century) mirror works have given his work a reflective character. His work may be considered interactive and conceptual as some fleetingly reflect the images of their viewers. Large-sized sculptures are covered with tiny mirrors that change color with a shift in light or position, multiplying what they reflect. The plurality of images thus proliferated has a spiritual dimension – mirror works are used in places of worship throughout Iran. The multiplicity of images shatters the individual's ego to arrive at a devotional unity.

Fereydoun Ave (b. 1945, Tehran, Iran) is an influential figure in Iranian contemporary art. He received his BA in Applied Arts for Theatre from Arizona State University (1964), studied Film at New York University (1969), and attended the University of Seven Seas (aka Semester at Sea, 1964). Over the past five decades, he has taken on many roles as an artist, designer, art director, collector, curator, gallerist, and art patron.

The art of Fereydoun Ave is a freehanded engagement with a personal ethos informed by more prominent cultural influences. He ceaselessly reflects on his relationship with age, myths, plants, elements, seasons, moods, and heredity. He takes inspiration from the art of Iran, which tends to use the entire canvas surface, and the Western penchant for minimalism, which leaves large swaths unattended. Fereydoun Ave's joint projects with artists, galleries (including Dastan), and institutions are an integral part of his practice, reflecting his role as a curator, gallerist, and collector.

Andisheh Avini (b. 1974, New York) is an artist who uses painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, often incorporating the traditional craft of marquetry in his artistic practice.

Andisheh Avini explores the duality of his own identity by combining iconic images like Persian calligraphy, decorative motifs, and portraiture with occidental concepts of minimalism and abstraction. Avini's approach speaks to a larger globalized society of nomads, the displaced, and the wayfarer, reflecting a contemporary multicultural experience to which many can relate.

  • Maryam Ayeen (b.1985, Bojnoord, Iran) and Abbas Shahsavar (b.1983, Kermanshah, Iran) have been painting together for over a decade. Ayeen holds a BA in Painting (Ferdowsi University, Mashhad, Iran, 2009). Shahsavar holds an MA in Illustration (University of Tehran) and a BA in Painting (Ferdowsi University, Mashhad, 2009). Their work follows an old tradition in Persian miniature painting. They live, teach, and paint in the city of Mashhad, Iran.

Together, the couple represents a generation of Iranian artists who navigate tradition and contemporary expression, with their practices evolving across painting, installation, and collaborative cultural engagement. Their continued presence in national and international exhibitions reflects a commitment to both personal artistic exploration and the broader discourse of Iranian visual culture.

Abbas Shahsavar began his artistic journey with a diploma in Graphic Design in 2000, and his early recognition came with an Honorary Diploma for stage design at the Mah Theater Festival in 2006.

With a strong foundation in traditional Persian painting, Maryam Ayeen gained recognition early on in her career, received numerous awards, and participated in national art festivals. Her accolades include multiple honors from Iran’s State Youth Visual Arts Festivals, notably 3rd place at the Iranian Persian Painting Biennial in 2008. She has also been granted permanent permission to install her work in the historic Attar’s Tomb in Neyshabour.

Works of Maryam Ayeen and Abbas Shahsavar deal with middle-class life. They use their own personalities as a model to explore the issues that take place in their lives. Their painting style is informed by the miniature tradition of Persian painting, even though their subject matter is not.

Homa Delvaray (b. 1980, Tehran, Iran) is an Iranian graphic designer and visual artist living and working in Tehran. Since earning a degree in Visual Communication from the University of Tehran (2006), she has extended her work across mediums, from installation to sculpture, textile art to artist books.

Her practice activates the overlap of graphic and stage design in a spatial framework. Her works, often presented as an installation of a group of objects, engage the architectural space using a combination of design and spatial strategies. A graphic designer by training, Delvaray employs the tools she has at her disposal to research and present what she observes as the paradoxical life within the dichotomies found in the life of contemporary Iranians. Her recent series investigates gender relations and how it has been formulated in mythological metaphors and tropes.

Bita Fayyazi (b. 1962, Tehran) lives and works in Tehran. More than a sculptor, an installation artist, or a ceramicist engaged in some mystic relationship with her material, Fayyazi is an artist who works within a more performative and markedly social practice.
Fayyazi has been active in art for around 30 years. As her involvement in art developed, she became interested in teamwork and collaboration. She actively engages in collaborative and performative projects with artists and individuals with no artistic backgrounds. By embracing such interactions, she explores the power of shared creativity, fostering meaningful connections and broadening the boundaries of artistic expression. Throughout the years, working together with others has become an integral and cherished part of her practice. This approach has shown to be more valuable, often surpassing the outcome itself.

    Meghdad Lorpour

Meghdad Lorpour (b. 1983, Shiraz, Iran) is a painter based in Tehran. He studied painting at Shahed University, Tehran (2010).
Throughout his career, Meghdad’s subject matter has ranged from portraiture to landscape and still life, and his analytical approach to every aspect of his work has constantly evolved. He begins with a multi-layered phase of research, which includes deep dives into related literature, travel, documentation, and recording oral histories, and continues by exploring his recollections of the research process as sketches and experiments in technique and representation. After his early focus on portraiture, inspired by Persian mythology and Miniature Painting, Lorpour soon shifted towards looking at animals in their natural habitats, contextualizing them in his research on mythological history. More recently, he has focused on nature itself — landscapes and the different aspects of the natural environment. The artist has been meticulously looking at nature through certain points of view and sought to induce inner mythological layers to his settings while depicting natural scenery.

    Farrokh Mahdavi

    Overview

Farrokh Mahdavi (b. 1970, Tehran, Iran) taught himself painting before studying with master painters and cultivating his passion for the medium. He lives and works in Tehran.

Canvases of Farrokh Mahdavi can be distinguished through unique pinkish hues. His technique aims to defamiliarize the well-known facial elements in a face. The fleshy-pink color of the artist's figures allows the rendering of "a more general depiction of human beings devoid of stereotypes of gender and race."  The faces in Mahdavi’s work are reduced to features like the eyes or the lips, and the rest are covered by thick layers of pink paint, hinting at the emotional world of his characters. He tries to specify forms and conditions without directly depicting anything additional, as he believes it deviates from the main point.

Mehrdad Mohebali (b. 1960, Tehran, Iran) is a Tehran-based artist. He graduated in Painting from the University of Tehran.

In the works of Mehrdad Mohebali, usually done in large formats, people are executed in a manneristic fashion. His early surreal scenes gave way to portraits of familiar political figures and scenes from art history next to those of the painter and ordinary people. His use of intense colors, lighting, and the poses of his subjects imbues his works with affectations and distortions.

His work has been exhibited in solo and GROUP EXHIBITIONS in Iran and internationally; including at the Lajevardi Foundation in Tehran (2016), the 2015 Venice Biennale, the Salsali Private Museum in Dubai (2012), the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (2004 and 2001), and the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art (2002).

Nicky Nodjoumi (b. 1942, Kermanshah, Iran), known also as Nicky Nodjumi, is an Iranian-born American painter. He honed his artistic skills and gained recognition in his homeland before relocating to New York. Mr. Nodjoumi imitated Russian painters in his youth, shifted focus to landscape painting following a friend's suggestion, and, after completing high school, moved to Tehran to pursue a degree in Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
Nicky Nodjoumi, known for his large-scale figurative oil canvases, skillfully combines historical and phantasmagorical imagery with sharp political commentaries. His compositions are straightforward, precise, and expressive, often featuring disintegrated portraits, disguised faces, clowns, and animals. Using storytelling, he piles bodies and body parts irreverently, challenging the connection between art and politics. Nodjoumi's works, influenced by social and political incidents, evoke a sense of fragmented narratives and the absurdity of power. His art has gained a significant following both in Iran and internationally, reflecting his enduring critical approach over six decades of artistic activity.

Peybak (Peyman Barabadi and Babak Alebrahim Dehkordi, both b. 1984, Tehran, Iran) is the acronym of two artists working together as a "unified duo" since December 20, 2001.
Peybak is well-known for depicting imaginative creatures in a dystopian reverse void. The duo works on every piece together, each taking on different parts until they both declare it finished. Persian poetry, mythology, and miniature painting inspire Peybak's works.

    Artists

    Farah Ossouli

Farah Ossouli (b. 1953, Zanjan, Iran) is a painter working and living in Tehran. She received her BA in Graphic Design from the University of Tehran, where she taught between 1972 and 1987. She founded DENA, a female art collective that has organized over 30 exhibitions since 2001. She is a member of the Society of Iranian Painters.
Farah Ossouli achieved a unique fusion of techniques, materials, themes, and narrations during her forty-year career as an artist. She has been a pioneer in introducing contemporary themes and ideas into miniature painting. The latest collections of Farah Ossouli are based on classical European paintings (by Delacroix, Goya, David, Manet, Titan, Rembrandt, and Ingres, among others), chosen by the artist based on their historical and conceptual relevance vis-à-vis the manifestation of violence in our world today. By transforming the medium (Persian painting) and figures (female holding the torch), Farah Ossouli is presenting the viewer with a new way of looking at the events taking place around us.

  • Morteza Pourhosseini (b. 1985, Ahvaz, Khuzestan Province, Iran) received his BA in Painting from Shahed University of Art (2010).   Works of the artist in "In-between" framed his contemporary characters within the tradition of religious iconography of northern Europe. Their covered eyes, gazes that were lowered or beheld the horizon, their pliant bodies, pointed to an incident – an incident that has taken place and whose consequences were yet to come to light. "In-Between" seems to emphasize this sense of being on the threshold, "They are just one step from the Fall and the faceless figures are only observers."
