In a resolute manner of action, Newsha Tavakolian exposes the flaws of the past to shine a spotlight on the enduring struggles of Iranian women. Drawing from her personal experience as a female photographer and connecting it to the arduous life experiences of Iranian women, Tavakolian presents her controversial series titled “And They Laughed at Me” in the third edition of the Mantua Women’s Photography Biennial. The series begins with a poignant image of a woman delicately smelling a rose, reflecting the artist’s unwavering hope and strength amidst adversity.
