Dastan’s Basement joyfully announces the opening of “Sohrab, Son of Rostam”, a joint exhibition of works by acclaimed artist Fereydoun Ave (b. 1945, Tehran) and photographer Alborz Kazemi (b. 1989, Tehran). The exhibition opens on the 22nd day of the Iranian New Year (Friday April 11, 2025). “Sohrab, Son of Rostam”, will be on view through Friday April 25.
In many of his works, Fereydoun Ave appeals to Persian mythology to shine light on an aspect of his relationship with his surrounding, to inform his understanding of the lores suffusing the Iranian Plateaux. One such lore is the relationship between father and son. Ave has collaborated with many younger artists in the past and here, too, he tests the elder-younger bond with Alborz Kazemi, whose forays into photography challenges the existing assumptions about image creation. Works were developed independently and entered into a conversation mediated by the artists. The younger artist is offering his take on the son-father dynamic while the older show us how the dynamic takes hold.

Fereydoun Ave has influenced the Iranian art scene in many different ways for the past 5 decades. He has held and curated numerous exhibitions in many places around the world. His works are held in various international collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the British Museum, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Cy Twombly Foundation, the Roundabout Collection, the Afkhami Collection, and the Bakhtiari Collection.
Alborz Kazemi is one of the directors of Dastan's Basement. He realized at some point that there is always a loss in the stutter of the shutter in photography and casts doubt as to the nature of its referential status. His works of photography have appeared in numerous group and solo exhibition. "Pieces of Body" (Dastan Electricroom, Tehran, Iran, 2017); "Image Corpus" (Dastan Basement Gallery, Tehran, Iran, 2019); "Encounter-Encounter" (Dastan Outside Projects, Tehran, Iran, 2019); "None Turned Into Memory" (Dastans Basement, Tehran, Iran, 2021) are some of his solo exhibitions with Dastan.
