Dastan's Basement announces “Pink Sunset”, a solo exhibition of works by Shadi Yasrebi, opening on September 13th and continuing through October 4th, 2024. This marks her second solo exhibition at Dastan’s Basement following “A Shield To Hide Behind”, in 2022.
In this new body of work, Yasrebi continues her exploration of urban space, architecture, and the concept of shelter. Drawing from themes that have been central to her practice for years, the artist reflects on the relationship between primitive forms of shelter and contemporary architecture. Inspired by Bernard Rudofsky’s book Architecture Without Architects, Yasrebi considers how vernacular architecture, shaped by necessity and collective intelligence, contrasts with modern architectural practices. Her use of cardboard as a primary material reflects both her Iranian heritage and her ongoing engagement with the layered nature of urban structures, enabling her to capture forms that resonate with her conceptual focus on security and shelter.
Shadi Yasrebi (b. 1989, Tehran), a graduate of Graphic Design from Azad University, has held three solo exhibitions to date.
Shadi Yasrebi creates distinctive sculptural assemblages by incorporating found and collected objects – flyers, wire, pieces of wood, and cardboard. In her "A Shield to Hide Behind" series (Dastan's Basement, 2021), the artist incorporates the geometric forms of arches and domes. In naming some of her works, she sometimes refers to historical places in Iran: "Sunset in Yazd", "Early Morning in Si-o-Se Pol", and "Closed Bazar.”
