Ali Khataie Ilkhchi | ''Korsī-katt (Baseline)": Dastan's Basement

Dastan's Basement is pleased to announce the solo exhibition of works by Ali Khataie titled "Korsī-Katt (Baseline)". The exhibition opens on Friday May 31, 2019 and will be open for public viewing through June 14, 2019. This is Ali Khataie's first exhibition at Dastan.
Ali Khataie (b. 1980, Ilkhchi, Iran) is a graduate of Carpet Studies from Art University of Isfahan. In his works, Khataie searches for hidden dualities in concepts such as fear or border, or contradictory purposes of things.
"Korsī-Katt (Baseline)" is a collection of drawings and sculptures using letters and lines as basic subject matter which moves freely in space and surface, knowingly defying the baseline which is considered to tame writings and letters, reminding the old tradition of Siyah-Mashq in the process.
In his text written on this series, Farzan Nasr, believes calligraphers practicing Siyah-Mashgh were "rebels" who "refused to sit on compulsory korsīs, subconsciously realized that korsīs are collective and compulsory." And found "beauty in shaking all korsīs."
Nasr believes that these calligraphers seek "aesthetics as well as liberation through the expression of individual matter as a script which has to create at every single moment a new korsī in itself."
