“HAFT PEYKAR”

Haft Peykar* is seven Seven “numbers” as a textile sculptures to resemble seven “Alams*”, which are carried by the wooden pulleys and are hanging from the ceiling. This project is inspired by “folkloric Iranian-Islamic culture” both visually and conceptually. My concept is to use language of numbers to narrate “Commands”, “Rituals" and “Protocols” that our culture addresses, which may seem odd, but residues of it has remained over centuries, and we have always carried the burden of these sediments. Framed texts containing traditional beliefs, religious convictions, rituals and myths in conjunction with colorful pieces of fabric, are patch works of codes and symbols governing the folklore culture of Iran. The embroidered flags of “Ashura”, Islamic talisman diagrams and symbols and patchwork technique are sources of inspiration.

Homa Delvaray/ 2018

*HAFT PEYKAR, a famous romantic epic by Nezami of Ganja from the last decade of the 12th century. The title can be translated literally as “seven portraits,” but also with the figurative meaning of “seven beauties.” Both translations are meaningful and the poet doubtless exploited intentionally the ambiguity of the words.

*ALAMS are flags of spiritual significance for the Shia Muslims, colorful Alams are carried in processions of Ashura
