  • Mohsen Vaziri Moghaddam

    Mohsen Vaziri Moghaddam

Mohsen Vaziri Moghaddam (1924 – 2018) is acknowledged as a pioneer of Iranian abstractionism and a leading figure in developing contemporary Iranian art. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. He was also an educator, opening the way for many to-be artists to go beyond the limits of established ways. His "Drawing Method and Painting Guide" (1981) is today's standard academic text.

He is widely recognized for works spanning five decades, from the painterly abstracts of the 1960s to the hard-edged geometry of the sculpted and painted aluminum wall reliefs of his later years. Vaziri's work is characterized by a restless experimentation of form through materials -- deployed in his drawings, sand paintings, opto-kinetic sculptures, and painted aluminum wall reliefs.

  • Parvaneh Etemadi, Overview

    Parvaneh Etemadi

    Overview

Parvaneh Etemadi (b. 1945, Birjand, Iran) is a painter who has worked with various techniques for more than five decades. She is best known for paintings of lifeless nature. Born in Birjand she moved to Tehran with her family when she was six. When her high school teacher, the famous Iranian writer Jalal Al-e Ahmad, saw one of her sketches on the margin of a book, he introduced her to painter Bahman Mohassess. Etemadi is Mohassess's only direct student. She inherited her taste, she says, from Mohassess and her audacity from Al-e Ahmad.

Parvaneh Etemadi has depicted domestic scenes and ordinary objects from everyday life with simple, concise, and sometimes poetic language. In her paintings, form supersedes narration and expression. Etemadi can discover beauty in things – bottles, wooden pestles, and vases – that may not appear beautiful at first glance. From simple colored pencils to hard cement, she makes use of a wide range of tools in her paintings. Her encounter with the canvas reflects her creative and daring spirit. In 1967, Etemadi enrolled in the School of Fine Arts but later withdrew. Less than two decades later, she joined the artists of the Qandriz Hall, where she was the only woman member. Her first exhibition at this venue took place in 1968. Transitioning toward formal experimentalism in the late forties, Etemadi created notable works — simple, abstract paintings of lifeless nature on a rough cement texture. "I turned to draw lifeless nature," she says of this period, "placing the painting in another layer under the figures and motifs, engaging the viewer with a familiar shape while adhering to my accepted principles." In the 1970s, she established "Studio Parvaneh," where she held painting classes. She has influenced many artists, like Avish Khebrezadeh and Sadeq Tirafkan, with her unique teaching style. In the 1980s, she experimented with colored pencils, forming her distinct identity by incorporating repetitive visual elements. In the first decade of the new millennium, she made use of collage techniques. This was her fourth artistic period. "Daughter of Shah Paryan" is one of her series from this period. She also experimented with ceramics in conjunction with calligraphy. In her latest artistic phase, starting with the exhibition "Once Upon a Time" (2004), she drew inspiration from Iranian myths, offering a critical perspective on contemporary society. She is an artist who actively shapes her narrative through every evolutionary phase of her artistic life. She was the subject of a documentary film, "Parvaneh" (2019), by Bahman Kiarostami.

  • Seroj Barseghian (b. 1953 in Esfahan, Iran) is a painter who graduated from the University of Tehran, where he was also a lecturer.
Seroj Barseghian's studies on the physics of colors and waves have occupied him since 2003. His multifaceted career, working with colors and images in the textile and design industries, alongside his métier as a painter, has equipped him with a structured and systematic mind. His practice as a painter is also akin to research and study. Barseghian believes that “strips – in addition to line, shape, space, value, form, texture, and color – can be a basic element in art ... these strips can become an alternative opportunity to develop human imagination and visualization.”

Mohammad Hossein Maher (b. 1957, Abadan, Iran) is a contemporary Iranian painter and sculptor, with a degree in painting from Tehran's School of Fine Arts. He is a well-known figure and is considered one of the prominent painters in contemporary Iranian art, teaching art to students and aspiring artists for many years.

Throughout his years of activity, has consistently offered insightful perspectives on the cultural and historical experiences of society, as well as his inner world, to his audience. In his artistic journey, Mohammad Hossein Maher initially focused on southern Iran, holding exhibitions featuring local elements. Over time, his work evolved, delving into deeper cultural and mythological aspects, embracing the symbolism of myth and folkloric figures. Maher explored the themes of migration and displacement, particularly during his "Yademan" series. His "Peleh" series, on the other hand, is a more personal exploration of movement and progression, emphasizing the significance of texture and minimalism. Maher's work reflects his deep connection to cultural and historical elements, presenting a thought-provoking narrative through his art. He often places colors in small pieces on the surface, thus confronting the viewer with numerous frames in a primary composition. The predominant composition found in his works is the "cross composition." In what he has produced, both in terms of symbols and in terms of attention to qualities and concepts, the study of Manichaean and Zoroastrian art cannot be overlooked.

Mehrdad Mohebali (b. 1960, Tehran, Iran) is a Tehran-based artist. He graduated in Painting from the University of Tehran.

In the works of Mehrdad Mohebali, usually done in large formats, people are executed in a manneristic fashion. His early surreal scenes gave way to portraits of familiar political figures and scenes from art history next to those of the painter and ordinary people. His use of intense colors, lighting, and the poses of his subjects imbues his works with affectations and distortions.

His work has been exhibited in solo and GROUP EXHIBITIONS in Iran and internationally; including at the Lajevardi Foundation in Tehran (2016), the 2015 Venice Biennale, the Salsali Private Museum in Dubai (2012), the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (2004 and 2001), and the Tokyo Museum of Contemporary Art (2002).

Mehran Mohajer (b. 1964, Tehran, Iran) is an artist, teacher, writer, and translator living and working in Tehran. He holds a BA in Photography (1990) and an MA in General Linguistics (1994) from the University of Tehran. A faculty member at his alma mater, he has been teaching in various academic institutions for the past three decades. He has authored several books on literary criticism and photography. His articles on photography have appeared, among other places, in Herfeh: Honarmand magazine.

Mehran Mohajer is captivated by the relationship between the camera and the act of seeing. The locus of our visual attention is borne by a field interposed by obstructions, byroads, flank views, and blurs. Mohajer's camera makes sure that his viewer is engaged with that which is surpassed in the act of seeing. What intrudes in his frames can be a pair of fingers ("Between and Non-Between", 2017), a fist, a sheet of glass ("The Present Past", 2017), letters of the alphabet, or the misty blur from a slow exposure ("Air of the Land", 2019). Whatever the obstructions, the photographer brings an embodied presence to the frames of his photograph. Some of his frames point to "no-thing" ("Scaffolding", 2021). He pays attention to the dynamics of the language of the camera and challenges its boundaries. "The Syntax of Effacement"(+2 Gallery, 2024) continues with his interest in the linguistics of the photographic image – what it hides in the process of revealing.

    Overview

Reza Abedini (b. 1967, Tehran) is an Iranian artist and graphic designer. He graduated from the University of Tehran in graphic design (1985) and Painting (1992). He is also an art critic, independent art director with Reza Abedini Studio (1993), and art director at "Manzar" magazine in Iran. He lives and works in Iran, the Netherlands, and Lebanon.

The works of Reza Abedini maintain a modern theme as he blends traditional Islamic patterns, calligraphy, and culture. He combines simple illustrations with poetic typography and elegant layouts, exploring the elaborate beauty of the Persian script and language. He is known for solving the Persian script layout problem using a technique to break the font's continuous and single-leveled baseline and to extend the height of every visual cluster to his preferred dimension.

    Farrokh Mahdavi

    Overview

Farrokh Mahdavi (b. 1970, Tehran, Iran) taught himself painting before studying with master painters and cultivating his passion for the medium. He lives and works in Tehran.

Canvases of Farrokh Mahdavi can be distinguished through unique pinkish hues. His technique aims to defamiliarize the well-known facial elements in a face. The fleshy-pink color of the artist's figures allows the rendering of "a more general depiction of human beings devoid of stereotypes of gender and race."  The faces in Mahdavi’s work are reduced to features like the eyes or the lips, and the rest are covered by thick layers of pink paint, hinting at the emotional world of his characters. He tries to specify forms and conditions without directly depicting anything additional, as he believes it deviates from the main point.

Pooya Aryanpour (b. 1971, Tehran, Iran) is an artist, art instructor, and university lecturer based in Tehran. He studied Painting at Azad University of Tehran, where he obtained his M.A. in 1999. He has been an active artist, instructor, and curator over the past three decades.

Since the 2000s, Pooya Aryanpour has made use of mirrors in his sculptures, a practice made popular by artist Monir Farmanfarmaian in the early 1970s. Aryanpour's studies of Qajar's (19th-20th centuries) mirror works have given his work a reflective character. His works can also be considered interactive and conceptual as they fleetingly reflect the image of their viewers. Large size sculptures are covered with tiny mirrors that change color with a shift in lighting, multiplying what they reflect. The plurality of images thus reflected has a spiritual dimension – mirror works are used in places of worship throughout Iran. The multiplicity of images shatters the individual's ego to arrive at a devotional unity. Aryanpour has been created from many materials and in abstract form in widely different sizes.

His work has been extensively exhibited, both in Iran and at international biennials, gallery shows, art fairs, and institutional exhibitions, namely the sculpture biennial in Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (2017), Sophia Contemporary Gallery (London, 2016), and "Gone with the Wind" (Kahrizad Sugar Factory, Tehran, 2022).

Andisheh Avini (b. 1974, New York) is an artist who uses painting, drawing, printmaking, and sculpture, often incorporating the traditional craft of marquetry in his artistic practice.

Andisheh Avini explores the duality of his own identity by combining iconic images like Persian calligraphy, decorative motifs, and portraiture with occidental concepts of minimalism and abstraction. Avini's approach speaks to a larger globalized society of nomads, the displaced, and the wayfarer, reflecting a contemporary multicultural experience to which many can relate

  • Nasrin Maleksabet (b. 1981, Yazd, Iran) studied Ceramic Engineering at the University of Yazd (1991-2004). She held her first ceramic exhibition in 2007 and moved to painting. In her recent work, she has explored the potential of thread, fabric, handmade dye, cotton, wool, and other materials that fall within the textile category.
Works of Nasrin Maleksabet are composed of countless threads interwoven in a complex pattern. These threads create a unified visual field despite their fragmented appearance. In the tradition of carpet weaving, warp and weft are often seen as the masculine and feminine elements. In such light, works of Maleksabet can be seen as a dialogue between these two forces. While her work does not conform to the traditional structure of carpet weaving, the way in which she uses threads to create expressive lines and shapes suggests a sense of emotional intensity.
Nasrin Maleksabet started showing her work at Shirin Art Gallery (Tehran, 2013). Her next solo painting exhibition was also at Shirin Gallery (Tehran, 2015). She showed her work in many GROUP EXHIBITIONS: The 4th Annual of Contemporary Arts Persbook (Artists Forum, Tehran, 2013), Artists Forum (Tehran, 2015), Pardis Mellat Gallery (Tehran, 2016), Khak Gallery (Tehran, 2017), Hepta Gallery (Tehran, 2017), "Compilation" (+2, Tehran, 2022, with Fariba Borufar).

Mamali Shafahi (B.1982, lives in Paris-Tehran) His immersive and mixed-media installations include sound and light and deliver a visual feast adorned with enigmatic chimeras that defy categorisation. His works serve as mirrors reflecting the complexities of cultural diversity and identity, shattering stereotypes and inviting viewers to embrace the richness that lies beneath the surface. They provide a getaway to the realms of fantasy while paying tribute to his Iranian heritage. Within a mesmerising environment of optical illusions, viewers are transported beyond their everyday experience into a state of equilibrium between the magical and the terrible, fantasy and horror. As part of “Daddy Sperm”, he worked on an experimental docu-fiction film, Nature Morte, involving his parents. This film was the backbone of an installation at City Princes/ses at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2019. His VR project, nerd_funk, with Ali Eslami, have been featured at Het nieuwe instituut, Rotterdam, the Vancouver Biennale and IDFA film. It also won the Golden Calf award for Best interactive film at the Netherlands Film Festival.

Taher Asad-Bakhtiari (b. 1982, Tehran, Iran) is a self-taught artist whose practice focuses on but is not limited to objects, textiles, and experiences. After studying multimedia and management in Canada and Switzerland, Taher opened a creative agency in Tehran and later New York City. He has developed several bodies of work, including “The Tribal Weave Project”.

He is known for his contemporary reinterpretation of traditional hand-woven tribal weaves.

Drawing from his Bakhtiari tribal heritage, he reimagines traditional weaving techniques through his “The Tribal Weave Project.”

In his 'Recovered Barrels' project, he employs sustainable and environmental art by repurposing and upcycling waste. The artist transforms deformative industrial oil barrels by glamorizing each into a highly polished, resin-coated object. In a different context, what once served as a tool in a construction site artistically acquires a chair's functionality.

Asad-Bakhtiari’s work has been exhibited at major cultural events such as the London Design Festival. His designs have been featured in prominent auctions, such as Christie’s Modern & Contemporary Middle Eastern Art sale in London. He has also been recognized with awards like the 2021 Product Design Award for his collaboration with cc-tapis in Architectural Digest Middle East.

    Overview

Ghasemi Brothers – Morteza, Sina, and Mojtaba Ghasemi Sheelsar – have worked together since 2015. They pursue their painting individually but work together on a single piece when part of the collective.

The trio works freely and without thematic or technique-related limits, giving them room to express themselves freely. Their approach has provided them with the ability to continue working together. Initially, they created a single discourse based on their shared themes and interests. Ghasemi Brothers gradually started to paint objects reminiscent of their native city, the coastal area of Bandar Anzali, and its ecology – the Caspian Sea, rain, and the color blue.

Their collaborative work has been featured in “Red Room” (Dastan’s Basement, July 2016), “Red Room 2: Migratory Birds” curated by Roya Khadjavi (Elga Wimmer Gallery, New York, April 2017), and “Blue Room” (V-Gallery, a Dastan: Outside Project, 2018).

  • Meghdad Lorpour

    Meghdad Lorpour

Meghdad Lorpour (b. 1983, Shiraz, Iran) is a painter based in Tehran. He studied painting at Shahed University, Tehran (2010).
Throughout his career, Meghdad’s subject matter has ranged from portraiture to landscape and still life, and his analytical approach to every aspect of his work has constantly evolved. He begins with a multi-layered phase of research, which includes deep dives into related literature, travel, documentation, and recording oral histories, and continues by exploring his recollections of the research process as sketches and experiments in technique and representation. After his early focus on portraiture, inspired by Persian mythology and Miniature Painting, Lorpour soon shifted towards looking at animals in their natural habitats, contextualizing them in his research on mythological history. More recently, he has focused on nature itself — landscapes and the different aspects of the natural environment. The artist has been meticulously looking at nature through certain points of view and sought to induce inner mythological layers to his settings while depicting natural scenery.

    ©Guillaume ARGENTO

Sepand Danesh (b. 1984, Tehran, Iran) is a graduate of École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he studied under Giuseppe Penone and Philippe Cognée.

Works of Sepand Danesh stand at the crossroad of art and technology. He looks at the world as if through a pixelated filter – elements and figures in his paintings are made of squares/cubes in a Euclidian geometry of surfaces. These paintings start in a corner of an empty space with no ceiling or floor. Suspended between perpendicular lines is a vertical shelf where various elements and figures make a show. He uses drawing, painting and workshops to burst ideas about the dynamic of the Hub. His paintings represent optical illusion of inside corner (as the metaphor of impediment) without floor or ceiling which shelter his intimate and also the world's wider memory.

Peybak (Peyman Barabadi and Babak Alebrahim Dehkordi, both b. 1984, Tehran, Iran) is the acronym of two artists working together as a "unified duo" since December 20, 2001.
Peybak is well-known for depicting imaginative creatures in a dystopian reverse void. The duo works on every piece together, each taking on different parts until they both declare it finished. Persian poetry, mythology, and miniature painting inspire Peybak's works.

Bahman Mohammadi places characters in his paintings in different situations to study them. In "On the Sidelines 2" (Dastan's Basement, 2022) the running thread is "loneliness". The painter imagines the loneliness of his models, "Sometimes I playfully link the simple image of a person in my mind with his or her experience of being lonely". But the artist is not satisfied by the mere representation of loneliness; just as he tries to go beyond what he sees in his models and tries to cast light on the hidden corners of their lives. With his muted color palette, he places the disintegrated faces and disjointed bodies of his models in a background with no clear signs of a setting. The distinction between floating and voluminous brush strokes in the foreground and the subtlety of the background make this separation possible. In "Outside This Empty Room" (Mah Art Gallery, 2015) he makes use of photographs to imagine the stories that form behind them. in "Leaving the Atmosphere" (Homa Art Gallery, 2011), like his previous series “Water Sprinkling" (Homa Art Gallery, 2010), characters are depicted sprinkling water on each other, whether as an act of purification or as a way to transport the other in a suspended space. "A Protozoan Self-portrait" series studies the evolution of the early humans. By drawing images on photographic paper Mohammadi traces back life to its protozoan origin. Bahman Mohammadi is an artist engaged with the wonders of life as they manifest themselves to him. Birth, rebirth, and social connections, among other subjects, drive him to seek a lasting connection with life as he lives it.
Mohammadi’s work have been exhibited in more than 50 group shows, nationally and internationally, including Ethan Cohen Gallery, New York, The Museum of Contemporary Art of Tehran, Etemad, and Mah Art Gallery in Tehran among many others. He was awarded in the Seventh Iranian Painting Biennial in 2009 as well as others. Bahman was the jury in the first and second Hamedan Painting Biennial. He is one of the members of The Society of Iranian Painters and the honorary member of the Institute for the Promotion of Contemporary Visual Art in Iran. Mohammadi’s practice revolves around the matters related to “Human” and “Human Being” such as birth, nurture, social constructions, evolution etc. He currently lives and works in Tehran.

Kiarash Alimi (b. 1985, Tehran) is an Iranian visual artist, writer, and former editor-in-chief of "Zamineh", a free online art magazine and content viewing platform, currently living and working in Tehran. He studied Painting at Tehran School of Visual Arts (2002).
Paintings of Kiarash Alimi reduce forms to an extreme with a fluid handling of color and an approach that foregrounds his explorations in painting as "a mental activity" and thinking-through-doing. His body of works is an invitation to "tamāšā", a persian word that underlines the act of prolonged observation.

  • Morteza Pourhosseini (b. 1985, Ahvaz, Khuzestan Province, Iran) received his BA in Painting from Shahed University of Art (2010).   Works of the artist in "In-between" framed his contemporary characters within the tradition of religious iconography of northern Europe. Their covered eyes, gazes that were lowered or beheld the horizon, their pliant bodies, pointed to an incident – an incident that has taken place and whose consequences were yet to come to light. "In-Between" seems to emphasize this sense of being on the threshold, "They are just one step from the Fall and the faceless figures are only observers."

    Overview

Hoda Kashiha (b. 1986, Tehran, Iran) is a graduate of Painting from the University of Tehran (BA, 2009) and Boston University (MFA, 2014). She works and lives in Tehran.

Works of Hoda Kashiha bounce between everyday life and the imagery she sets out to produce. Through the use of non-linear narrative, dark humor, and mythological, religious, and modern icons, the artist meets with difficult moments in her personal and political life. Drawing from a variety of references – "from Malevich to Instagram" – she composes her fragmented narratives. Kashiha uses digital tools to first draw a work and then construct it on canvas, layer upon layer. Nevertheless, this way of fragmenting motifs deals with major contemporary subjects such as persisting gender relations. The body plays an important role in many of the artist’s works. It's through the body that she relates to the world, becomes aware of her desires, and constructs an identity. Drawing the body not only projects her personal life but also the external world. Being interested in man and woman interaction, she uses various tools (airbrush, i-Pad, stencil) and subjects (body fragments, geometric abstraction) that affect an ambiguity that separates traditional definitions of male-female, resulting in gender fluidity.

Yousha Bashir (b. 1989) is an Iranian post-digital artist currently active in his hometown of Tehran. He studied Visual Arts at Farhangian University (2011). Bashir works across media to create paintings, sculptures, and installation pieces.

Yousha Bashir is a dynamic artist whose work has undergone significant changes in style and output. His landscape series (Inner Landscapes, Outer Landscapes, Ultimate Landscapes, The Infinite Continuum) and his self-portraits are relational studies of form with the frame (the viewers' perception) and the space surrounding the frame. He thus challenges the painting’s solid framework by exploring the relationship between the digital realm and the physicality of painting. His vibrant and luminous imagery question the definition of the creative space and the creative loci in the digital age and computer graphics. The self and how it is separated from the real world is one of the central explorations throughout his works. With the loss of image clarity in the process of a digital translation, he arrives at frames that open to a new two-dimensional world defined by restrictions and opportunities each possesses.

Bashir has held six solo exhibitions, including his latest, "The Infinite Continuum" (Parallel Circuit, October-November 2021), and participated in more than 30 exhibitions, including at the Frieze Los Angeles (2022) as well as Art Dubai (2020 and 2021) with Dastan's Basement.
