Parallel Circuit presents a solo booth of works by Mohammad Piryaee at Bawwaba section, Art Dubai 2025. Piryaee's crimson and black sculptures seem to have been burried for ages, scorched by the elements, bearing witness to the passage of time. They provide a context for the curatorial direction at this year's Bawwaba: "We are living in times of great political, social and ecological turmoil," says curator Mirjam Varadinis, looking for answers, "Art has the ability to define the possible and at the same time remember common ground - both urgently needed today." Piryaee's drawings on paper outline towering monuments belonging to a dreamscape. Together with his sculptures, they seem to be showing us our affinity with a past that has never passed.
Mohammad Piryaee (b. 1985, Qom, Iran) is a Tehran-based artist whose works are born on paper. He received his MA in Painting from Tehran University of Art in 2010 and his BA in Hanxdicrafts from Kashan University in 2007. His drawings and printmaking bring us face-to-face with monumental but ethereal formations. Each of these 2D drawings can potentially shape-shift into 3D. Sculptures of Mohammad Pirayee are abstracted architectural forms created with materials such as ceramic, scorched wood, and resin, often hinting at Persian-Islamic architecture.
