Published on magnumphotos.com, Newsha Tavakolian speaks to Sara Kazemimanesh from her studio about the series “And They Laughed at Me”, currently on view at MUDEC in Milan.
In the article she writes about Newsha Tavakolian's new photo series "And They Laughed at Me" which is a departure from her usual technically meticulous approach. The series only includes photos that are flawed in some way, reflecting Tavakolian's desire to examine her gaze and the memories that shaped her. This marks a turning point in Tavakolian's career, as she has previously felt obligated to pause and reconsider how to move forward professionally.
Tavakolian started her career as a photojournalist, but she was temporarily banned from working in Iran. After taking some time off, she decided to embrace that change and made a conscious shift toward social documentary and conceptually creative work. This new direction led her to create the series "And They Laughed at Me".
The series is currently on view at the Museo delle Culture in Milan. It will run from December 13, 2023, to January 28, 2024. Tavakolian is also one of the six Magnum photographers leading Inside>>Out, a six-day workshop in Albania that takes place from April 21 to 26, 2024.
