Press release

TEHRAN – March 9, 2016. Dastan’s Basement is pleased to announce the opening of Peybak’s solo exhibition “Abrakan (Naissance)” on March 11, 2016. The exhibition will be open for public viewing through April 2. This is Peybak’s second solo exhibition at Dastan’s Basement. Peybak has enjoyed wide recognition and success in the recent three years. Their work was also exhibited in a solo exhibition at GP & N Vallois Gallery (Paris), a group exhibition at Domaine Vranken Pommery (Reims, France) Armory Art Fair (New York), Fiac (Paris), a curated group exhibition at Le Tripostal (Lille, France), Abu Dhabi Art Fair (in the curated section) and Contemporary Istanbul. Peybak’s work has been featured in one Dastan Outside the Basement project in Sam Art. Also, a number of their works will be shown in Dastan’s booth at Art Dubai 2016.
Peybak comprises of Peyman Barabadi and Babak Alebrahim Dehkordi both born in 1984 and working together as a “unified duet”. They start work on every piece together, both working on different parts of the painting until both declare it finished. They have taken inspirations from Persian poetry, mythical stories and miniature painting and created an imaginary world filled with silhouette-like creatures, not one similar to another. Swarms of these creatures are gravitated towards the center of the paintings, into darkness.
“Abrakan” (literally “Small Clouds”) is a Persian-language neology made out of three parts: “abr” meaning “cloud”, the suffix “-ak” that means “small” and the plural suffix “-an”.
