This was a time when Iran was profoundly affected by World War II, facing challenges such as occupation by Allied forces, predominantly Britain and the Soviet Union, the signing of the Tripartite Treaty of Alliance, the famine of 1942-1943, and intermittent cholera outbreaks that nearly claimed the lives of their platoon. After enduring two years in the military, they maintained their friendship for a while thereafter. The artist possesses a photograph that once belonged to her father, featuring Karim, as she is captivated by his unique beauty, particularly because Karim had a cleft lip, also known as cheiloschisis.
